Republic Polytechnic (RP) is the only polytechnic in Singapore to adopt a full-time Problem Based Learning (PBL) system, which has helped to develop students throughout their years of studying in the institution.
This year, RP has produced its 10th graduating batch, all of which have gone through the school’s unique PBL system. This way of learning requires students to solve real life situations and present their solutions in front of people, which may sound unconventional to some. However, graduates share that they find themselves more developed and confident after going through this method of learning.
Tan Wei Jie, 20, a graduate from Diploma in Interactive & Digital Media (DIDM), said he has built up his confidence in presenting over the years in RP.
“In the past, when speaking in front of large crowds, it was quite scary for me but now it’s okay,” said Wei Jie, “I’m no longer afraid of presenting in front of large crowds and I feel more confident also.”
Besides the graduates who have felt themselves change and develop over the course in RP, Madam Zalili Yunus, 46, parent of a Diploma in Biomedical Science (DBMS) graduate, also thinks that her child has improved a lot particularly in her writing skills. RP students are required to complete Reflection Journals (RJ) daily after the end of each lesson.
When asked about her take on the PBL system, she said: “I think it relates more to working life which is very practical.”
Another graduate who has developed themselves in RP is Daphne Tan, 20, a graduate from Diploma in Materials Science (DMTS). Like Wei Jie, she said that she is much more confident in presentations.
Although delighted to graduate, she added that she would miss the friends she has made here: “Thank you for giving me such a great time in school,” said Daphne, “I hope for the best for their future.”
